Independent Plastics Engineering Consulting

Expert Polymer Solutions. From Concept to Production.

Engineering a Brighter Material World.

The Polymer Group provides independent engineering consulting in materials selection, product design, surface decoration, and processing optimization. We help manufacturers solve complex challenges and bring better plastic products to market.

Core Services

Practical engineering support across the full life of a plastic part — from material selection through production.

Materials Selection & Development

Polymer and compound selection based on mechanical performance, chemical resistance, thermal requirements, appearance, processability, and cost. We support material substitutions, benchmarking, application requirements definition, and qualification planning.

Part Design & Manufacturability

Review of wall thickness, ribs, bosses, radii, structural features, tooling considerations, dimensional stability, and manufacturing risks. We support design for manufacturing and molded-part failure investigation.

Surface Appearance & Decoration

Support for color, gloss, texture, painting, printing, in-mold decoration, and laser marking. We help troubleshoot appearance issues, define lighting and evaluation conditions, and align material, process, and finished part.

Process Optimization

Systematic troubleshooting via scientific injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, and thermoforming. We support defect assessment, processing-condition reviews, focused trials, and validation.

Industries Served

Engineering support shaped around the requirements and realities of each market.

Automotive

Support for interior, exterior, and under-hood plastic components — material selection, appearance consistency, dimensional stability, and processing robustness under demanding production conditions.

Aerospace

Engineering guidance for polymer components where weight, thermal performance, and material qualification documentation matter. We support requirements definition and test planning.

Electronics

Enclosures, connectors, and precision components where moldability, dimensional control, and surface quality drive success. We help balance appearance and performance requirements.

Consumer Goods

Products where appearance, feel, and durability shape the customer experience. We support color and texture consistency, material selection, and design for high-volume manufacturing.

Packaging

Rigid and flexible packaging where processing speed, barrier and mechanical performance, and appearance must align. We support material evaluation and process troubleshooting.

About The Polymer Group

The Polymer Group is an independent consulting practice focused on plastics engineering challenges from concept through production. We connect material science, product design, surface aesthetics, and manufacturing to develop practical recommendations grounded in application requirements and production realities.

Founded by Justin Hindo, a plastics engineering professional with a B.S. in Plastics Engineering from Ferris State University.

Our Approach

A structured, transparent path from problem to production-ready solution.

  1. Discover

Define objectives, application requirements, constraints, and failure modes.

  2. Analyze

Evaluate materials, geometry, processing conditions, and available test data.

  3. Optimize

Recommend improvements and develop a focused trial or validation plan.

  4. Validate

Review results, refine recommendations, and support implementation.

Insights

Concise, technically grounded notes on common plastics engineering challenges.

Environmental Stress Cracking

Why combinations of stress and chemical exposure crack parts that pass every individual test — and how to evaluate ESC risk early.

Warpage and Dimensional Stability

How differential shrinkage, orientation, and cooling asymmetry drive warp in molded parts, and practical levers for controlling it.

Color and Surface Consistency

Why the same colorant can look different across lots, resins, and processes — and how lighting and evaluation conditions shape what customers see.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you help troubleshoot a molded-part problem?

Yes. Part failures and defects are a core part of our practice. We start by understanding the part, material, process, and history of the issue, then evaluate the likely contributing factors and recommend a focused path to root cause — which may include review of processing conditions, part and tooling design, material data, and targeted testing.

Can you support early product development?

Yes. Early involvement is often the most valuable time to engage. We help define application requirements, screen candidate materials, review part designs for manufacturability, and plan qualification work before commitments in tooling or material are locked in.

Which processing technologies do you support?

Our experience centers on injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, and thermoforming. If your process falls outside these areas, contact us — we will tell you plainly whether we can help.

How do engagements work?

Scope, deliverables, timing, and fees are agreed before work begins, so there are no surprises. Engagements range from focused reviews and troubleshooting to ongoing advisory support, shaped around the problem at hand.

What do you need from us to start?

A clear description of the part or problem, the material and process involved, and what a successful outcome looks like for you. From there we agree on scope and next steps together.
